ABRUS, CRAB’S EYE VINE or ROSARY PEA

This deciduous climber is so called because the very poisonous red seeds are marked with single black spots like a crab and are used for rosaries, necklaces etc. The flowers are mostly pale purple but may vary somewhat in colour. Abrus precatorius is the species commonly cultivated. It grows to about 12 ft., demanding a warm greenhouse and a moist atmosphere. Increase by seed sown in heat in spring.
