APTENIA

Natives of the Cape Colony, these are small half shrubs which flower freely in summer and autumn, with reddish-purple flowers. The stems are prostrate, and bear fleshy leaves. Propagation is easy from seed and cuttings. They should be kept moderately dry in winter.

Aptenia cordifolia. A much-branched species, with prostrate stems. Var. foliis variegatis is similar, with the leaves beautifully marked with creamy white. Both varieties are very suitable for baskets.
