Evergreen conifers, one (Araucaria araucana) being hardy in this country. Popularly known as the monkey-puzzle or Chile pine, it requires a cool soil and does not blend well with other trees, by reason of its unusual appearance. Grows to about 60 ft. with dark green, sharp-pointed leaves, persisting for a long period. The brown female cones resemble coconuts when mature but usually take two years to ripen. Increase by seed sown in gentle heat in March.
