Araucaria – Norfolk Island Pine, Monkey Puzzle

Unusual conifer, with triangular scales as leaves, closely covering the branches.

Situation:

This tree is often grown singly in front gardens. It is sensitive to frost and young specimens are frequently damaged, but with a bit of luck they will last a long time. The tree becomes more vigorous with age and quite large specimens are found in this country. Young plants should be given wind and frost protection.

Soil:

Well-drained, humus-rich, acid soil.

Propagation:

From seed and from cuttings.

Araucaria araucana: In temperate zones it grows to 10 m; the branches spread almost horizontally and are covered in triangular scaly green leaves. Mature trees will develop cones, from which seeds can be taken.
