All the bamboos are evergreen and prefer rich, moist soils with some shelter from cold winds which usually injure the foliage. Arundinaria nitida grows to about 10 ft.; A. japonica to 15 ft., and A.fastuosa to 20 ft. or more.

Bamboos increase by means of underground stems. When they are established some of the older canes can be cut out in spring and used as stakes. They should be planted in April, and may be divided at the same time.
