P. The popular name for several decorative species of asparagus such as A. plumosus and A. sprengeri. The former is an evergreen climber with wiry stems and fernlike leaves. There is a dwarf form A. nanus which is grown widely for floral arrangements. A. sprengeri is a trailing plant which is ideal for hanging baskets, and for pot culture indoors. It has small pinkish-white flowers followed by bright red berries and grows to about 6 ft.

Both species demand a warm greenhouse with some shade, plenty of water during summer and ample ventilation. A rich compost of loam, leaf mould and sand suits them best. Increase by division in March.
