Astrantia- Masterwort

A little known perennial, which deserves more attention, as it is valuable and easy to grow.

Situation:

Ideal in borders, since the muted hues and interesting shape of the little flowers fit well into innumerable colour schemes. Combination with, for instance, larkspurs or grey-leaved plants produces a fascinating effect. Masterwort likes some shade.

Soil:

Will thrive not only in clay or loamy soil, but also in not too dry sandy soil if rich in humus.

Propagation:

Sow in early autumn, keep frost-free throughout the winter and leave in the seed-bed for another year. Division in the spring is another good method.

Astrantia major: Height 40-80 cm; flowering season early to mid summer; flowers white, pale red shading to purple red. This is the most popular species.
