BOG GARDEN

Where there is a patch of very damp or swampy ground as on the edge of a pool or stream a small bog garden may be made, if an overflow is provided to prevent the water becoming stagnant. The moisture-loving primulas such as P. Beesiana, P. denticulata, P. pulve-rulenta and P. sikkimensis are first choices. Astilbes, Arundo Danax, Lobelia cardinalis and L. syphilitica, Mimulus luteus, Trollius, Saxijraga peltata and Lysichitium americanum will also succeed.

Iris Kaempferi (the Japanese iris) in its various named varieties, provided there is not much lime in the soil, should not be overlooked. Iris sibirica is less showy but equally attractive.
