BRUNNERA Perennial Forget-me-not

A ground cover plant which will grow quite happily in the shade under leafy trees. The large, branching spraysof small, star-shaped flowers in pale blue give the impression of a giant Forget-me-not, but the leaves show that it is more closely related to Anchusa than to Forget-me-not (Myosotis). These heart-shaped leaves are large and rough to the touch, producing dense clumps of foliage by the end of the season. Water during dry spells and cut off the flowering stems when the blooms have faded. An easy plant for difficult situations.

VARIETIES: A single species is grown in gardens – B. macrophylla, which used to be called Anchusa myosotidiflora. Its statistics are height 1.5 ft. Spacing 1.5 ft.

Flowering period: April-June with a second flush in autumn. The flowers are about VA in. across. The popular choice is the variegated variety B. macrophylla ‘Variegata’. Its leaf edges are cream – a shady site is essential for the development of this variegation.

SITE AND SOIL: Any well-drained garden soil will do – thrives best in shade.

PROPAGATION: Divide clumps in autumn or spring, or take root cuttings in winter.

By careful selection you can ensure that your border will be in bloom during every month of the year. For each month there is a list of perennials which can be expected to be in full flower – remember that some of these plants may come into bloom earlier and can continue to flower for many weeks afterwards.
