Butomus- Flowering Rush

This plant can be found growing wild ; it has particularly beautifully shaped flowerheads.

Situation:

Suitable for practically any garden pond; the plants are available from garden centres or from growers specialising in water plants. The depth of the water may vary between 10 and 40 cm. Plant in full sun.

Soil:

Butomus is not fussy as regards soil. If you want to grow the plants in containers, they should be planted in potting soil or clay with a 5 cm layer of sand, to prevent the soil blowing away.

Propagation:

Easily increased by division of the root-stock in spring. Can also be raised from seed.

Butomus umbellatus: Height 50-90 cm; innumerable pink flowers in umbels in late spring to early autumn. The leaves are stiff and bayonet-shaped.
