CALLUNA, LING or SCOTCH HEATHE

These are the well-known evergreen shrubs which grow wild on moorlands in England and Scot- land. They detest lime in the soil but most forms of C. vulgaris which vary considerably in colour and height, are not otherwise fussy about soil. One of the finest varieties is the double deep pink, Mrs H. E. Beale. It is in bloom frojn September to November, growing to about 18 in. Increase by cuttings of young shoots (about 2 in. long) in July. They should be inserted in pots of sand and peat under cloches.
