Camellia: Growing Guide

A beautiful evergreen garden shrub; its very early spring flowering is very striking.

Situation:

The camellia requires a certain degree of shade and, when night frost is forecast, it is advisable to give buds and flowers some protection to prevent damage.

Soil:

It definitely demands acid soil, adequately damp.

Propagation:

Garden forms can only be increased from cuttings or by layering.

Camellia japonica: Height in the Netherlands is only to 2 m, in England it reaches much greater heights; flowering season, depending on the strain, late winter to early summer. Occurs in a variety of flower shapes – single, double, anemone-shaped etc – but it is advisable to let your choice depend on the degree of winter-hardiness.
