CARYOPTERIS

FLOWERING SHRUB. Short-growing deciduous shrubs with grey, aromatic foliage and blue flowers. They prefer a sunny position, ideally against a wall as they are unhappy in cold, exposed positions. Caryopteris are not fussy about soil.

C. clandonensis has lavender-blue flowers in August and September. It reaches 5 ft. but can be kept lower by pruning in March. C. mongolica grows to about 3 ft. with large rich blue flowers and narrow leaves. It is slightly tender. Increase by 2 ½ in. long cuttings taken from non-flowering growths in late summer. They should be rooted in pots of sandy compost, placed under cloches or in a cold frame.
