Cephalaria

Cephalaria is the giant yellow scabious. These hardy plants are of branching habit and produce blooms like those of the popular blue scabious. The plants like the sun, although they also give a good account of themselves in semi-shade. They should be moved in the spring, when propagation by division is carried out. Seed can be sown in April.

Excellent plants for the back of the border, they will grow up to 5-6 ft high, although they are often less than this.

C. alpina has soft yellow flowers during June and July, while C. gigantea (or C. tartarica), which is the best, also has yellow blooms which are most effective when arranged in vases, especially as the deeply cut leaves are so ornamental.
