CLEMATIS HYBRID VARIETIES

These large-flowering hybrids are in alphabetical order and give the main characteristics of each variety. The colour and size of bloom, the approximate height to which they grow, although this and the size of flower will vary from place to place, their flowering period, which groups they belong to and how they should be pruned. ‘No Pruning’ in the descriptions means DO NOT PRUNE, under any circumstances during the winter or early spring, as these are varieties that flower in May and June on the previous year’s wood. They can be cut back directly after flowering, however, if space is limited, as they will grow during the summer to provide flowering wood for the following spring. ‘Prune Hard’ means that these varieties should be cut down as low as is possible during the winter or early spring, as they flower during the summer and autumn on the young wood only which is produced during the spring and early summer. ‘Pruning Optional’ means that these varieties bloom equally well on both young and old wood and can be left unpruned if an early show of flowers is desired, or can be pruned during the winter or early spring if a summer show is required.

Details of origin of varieties have been left out, as with most of them there are no records of where they were raised and the raiser, and this is of little interest to the general gardener who merely wants to know what colour the plant is, how high it will grow, and how it should be pruned. For this reason also I have left out all technical details of leaf formation, Number of sepals to each bloom, etc.
