CUPHEA or MEXICAN CIGAR FLOWER

An unusual tubular blossom which attracts attention in the border, where it should be used as edging. The usual variety grown is the scarlet Cuphea ignea; the all-white variety is alba. C. miniata Firefly is cerise-red. The general height is 1 ft. Sow seeds in late winter in heat, prick off, pot up, transfer to larger pots and plant out early in May. Looks well for greenhouse decoration, when keep in the same pots and do not over-water. John Innes Potting Compost suits this plant admirably.
