CURRANTS, BLACK AND RED

The name currant comes from the Greek city of Corinth, where our dried currants originated — these dried currants are really a small kind of grape, and our native currants are so called only because they resemble these. Black currants possess a high Vitamin C content.

Red currants differ considerably in growth and method of flowering and are derived from different species of Ribes. (The white currant is merely a variety of the red). For the flowering currant, see RIBES. Currants and all soft fruits are grown on their own roots.

The cultivation of red currants is dealt with after black currants as the two fruits are usually associated in most people’s minds.
