Cussonia spicata 7-10°C/45-50 F; South Africa

A handsome tree with palmate leaves that are supported on strong stems; they are deeply divided on mature plants and of widely differing shapes. Glossy dark green, purple beneath. Even when roots are confined to large pots it will become a fairly substantial tree in a comparatively short space of time. Keep moist, well fed in a loam- based soil and a light airy spot; pot on annually, but purchase only if there is ample space for the plant to develop, otherwise it could become an embarrassment. New plants are raised from seed.
