This disease causes seedlings, especially those grown in a greenhouse, to wilt, topple over and die. Watering soil and seedlings with Cheshunt compound prevents the disease, as does dressing seeds with a thiram seed dressing.

Lack of ventilation during misty and clamp spells is the most frequent cause of the trouble, which arises from a fungus growth especially attacking seedlings which are too crowded. By sparse sowing and thinning at an early stage to avoid overcrowding damping off can to a great extent be prevented. Nothing can be done with infected seedlings.
