Deutzia X elegantissima

If you have a large garden, grow it in groups, if you have a small garden, grow it as a single shrub, but grow it you must. Deutzia x elegantissima is hardy, tidy, exquisite in flower, pleasant at all other seasons, grows in any soil, and asks nothing but a sunny place and an annual pruning.

It is a dense, upright, deciduous shrub 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 m) tall which arches over in early summer, when every young shoot is loaded with clusters of small, rosy pink, starlike flowers, and elegantissima is the mot juste. In summer, it is covered with narrow green leaves until autumn, when the leaves fall to reveal a warm brown thicket which is an asset to the winter scene.
