Eranthis- Winter Aconite

One of the earliest spring flowers; it is a tuberous plant, not a bulb.

Situation:

Very attractive planted near a window, so that one looks down on the flowers from a warm room. Alternatively plant them along your garage drive or front path. They need sun or partial shade.

Soil:

The soil must not be too dry.

Propagation:

From seed. May seed itself and become naturalised.

Eranthis cilicica: Height 10-15 cm; deep-yellow flowers in early spring; the foliage is brownish in colour.

Eranthis hyemalis: Height 10-15 cm; yellow flowers as early as late winter; the most popular species.

Eranthis X tuhergenii: Height 10-15 cm; yellow flowers in early spring. Unlike the two species mentioned above this plant is clump-forming.
