T. Fagus sylvatica is the common beech which is widespread in the woods of the Chiltern Hills. It docs particularly well on limy soils and will eventually grow to nearly 100 ft. Beech makes an excellent hedge if spaced 18 in. apart and may be allowed to grow to about 10 ft. Beech is first class firewood and the leaves make excellent leaf mould. The copper beech is Fagus sylvatica cuprea. Beeches are propagated by seed.
