T. The ash is a tough, fast-growing tree which fares equally well in smoky areas, near the sea, on chalky soils, in windswept localities or in the heart of the country.
Fraxinus excelsior is the common ash, frequently planted as a roadside tree, its wood being used for handles of garden tools such as spades and rakes. Ash logs are also excellent for domestic fires. This species grows to 100 ft. or more. It is best increased bysown in autumn.
