Perennial plants which appeal to the imagination, but are difficult to grow.
Under shrubs or other plants, or in rock gardens.
Some species require lime, others are lime haters. In all cases goodis desirable.
Gentiana asclepiadea, willow gentian: Height 30-60 cm; magnificent night-bluefrom mid summer until early autumn. Requires damp woodland soil and partial shade.
Gentiana septemfida: Height 20-30 cm; blue flowers with brown patches inside in mid to late summer. A strong species which will grow almost anywhere, provided the soil is not too dry.
Gentiana sino-ornata: Height 15-20 cm; large trumpet-shaped blue flowers in early to mid autumn. Creeping habit. Does not tolerate lime.
