Gentiana- Gentian

Perennial plants which appeal to the imagination, but are difficult to grow.

Situation:

Under shrubs or other plants, or in rock gardens.

Soil:

Some species require lime, others are lime haters. In all cases good drainage is desirable.

Propagation:

From seed .

Gentiana asclepiadea, willow gentian: Height 30-60 cm; magnificent night-blue flowers from mid summer until early autumn. Requires damp woodland soil and partial shade.

Gentiana septemfida: Height 20-30 cm; blue flowers with brown patches inside in mid to late summer. A strong species which will grow almost anywhere, provided the soil is not too dry.

Gentiana sino-ornata: Height 15-20 cm; large trumpet-shaped blue flowers in early to mid autumn. Creeping habit. Does not tolerate lime.
