Gleditsia- Honey Locust

Unusual deciduous tree with thorny trunk.

Situation:

An attractive specimen tree, especially the garden cultivar illustrated. It needs a sunny situation, sheltered from strong wind.

Soil:

Will grow in any reasonable garden soil; tolerates drought.

Propagation:

From seed; garden forms by grafting.

Gleditsia triacantbos: Height to 20 m, up to 7 m across; a tree with a wide crown, becoming parasol-shaped at a later stage. The leaves are 8-15 lobed, usually double-pinnate. Greenish flowers in short-stalked clusters appear in early to mid summer and are followed by sickle-shaped pods, up to 30 cm long, which are retained for a long time. ‘Sunburst’, which does not grow very vigorously, is a fine form for the smaller garden.
