FLOWERING SHRUB. A valuable winter-flowering shrub which should be planted more widely as it takes up very little space. Hamamelis mollis bears rich yellow flowers with narrow, twisting petals. They have some fragrance if cut and brought into a warm room. This plant shows to best advantage if grown against a fairly dark green background of conifers or yew. Perfectly hardy, although the flowers may be damaged by really sharp frosts. A sunny position and well-drained loamy soil which does not dry out too easily, are best. This plant is a slow starter. Increase by layering the branches in spring.
