This genus comprises 7 species, all of which are very beautiful and desirable. They are easily cultivated, and thrive well in half shade as well as in full sunshine. All the Heliocerei are warmth-loving plants and flower better in full sunshine, in a mixture of 2 parts leaf-mould, 1 part loam and 1 part crushed bricks.

Heliocereus speciosus. Central Mexico. Erect or trailing and freely branching, the growing top dark red or reddish, passing to dark green. The areoles are large and woolly, with 5 to 8 spines. The inner petals of the flower are a shiny carmine, and green at the base. This species has been used to produce some of the most beautiful hybrid Epiphyllums.
