P. Border plants for sun or shade, preferring a soil that does not dry out too easily. They are valued chiefly for their handsome foliage, in various shades of green, sometimes with white or creamy- yellow variegations. The flower spikes are lilac or white, attractive though hardly showy as with most perennials grown in the herbaceous border. Most species flower in July, grow to about 2l2 ft., and can be increased by division in spring.
