With its delicate, feathery, bright green, submerged foliage, Hottonia palustris is a beautiful plant for shallow water, and one of the few oxygenators to produce attractive flowers.

Whorls of pale lavender or white flowers appear in clusters in early summer at the end of 21cm (9in) flowerstalks. The foliage dies hack in autumn and the plant overwinters as dormant buds.


Water violet needs soft, still water.

It can be difficult to establish in new ponds.

Propagation: Take cuttings in summer.
