Lathyrus- Sweet Pea

The annual, which provides very beautiful cut flowers, is the best known species.

Situation:

Creates an attractive division against a new wire fence and will quickly brighten a newly established garden. In the second year Lathyrus will not do quite so well in the same situation, unless the soil is thoroughly manured. Provide full sun or very light shade.

Soil:

Cool, very rich, moderately damp soil. If possible choose a different position every year.

Propagation:

From seed. For early flowering the seeds are sown in the autumn, but this may also be done in mid spring. Provide adequate support.

Lathyrus odoratus, sweet pea: Height to 3 m; flowering season, depending on the time of sowing, in summer. Bare, angular stalks; the leaves terminate in tendrils. Innumerable colours; consult a catalogue.
