P. This hardy attractive bulbous plant is somewhat like a snowdrop and can be planted in groups, in the rockery, in autumn 2 in. deep and 3 in. apart. The early flowering variety is the spring snowflake (Leucojum vernum) which has bell-shaped white flowers in March. They are tipped with green or yellow markings at the end of the petals. Grows to 7 in. and is useful for naturalising in grass. L. aestivum Gravetye is rather similar but reaches 18 in. and does best in shade. It is useful for cutting. L. autumnale reaches 6 in. with white, pink-tipped flowers in October and should be planted in early August, the other species in October. All are increased by division at planting time.
