Styraciflua is the North American sweet gum, a deciduous tree of pyramidal growth which eventually reaches 80 ft., though often a slow starter in this country. The maple-like leaves assume brilliant tints of red and orange in autumn and are noticeable from a considerable distance. A moist loam is desirable, as on thin, dry soils there is little or no autumn colouring. Increase by layering in autumn.
