LOAM

This term is often used somewhat loosely. It can mean the top spit from a pasture, or land which is roughly intermediate between clay and sandy soils, I.e. neither too heavy nor too light but with a sufficiency of humus and reasonably retentive of moisture. First-class loam is an important ingredient of potting composts such as the John Innes Composts.
