This is a genus of only one species. Columnar plants native to Sonora, Arizona, and Lower California, they are of slow growth but easy cultivation.

Lophocereus Schottii. The stems are dull green, erect and branching from the base, with 5 to 7 ribs. The areoles are large with 4 to 7 spines. The small pinkish flowers, which are nocturnal, are borne on the flowering tips, two or more from one areole, an exception to the general rule of one flower to an areole. There are three varieties of this plant, var. australis, var. sargentianus, and var. Gatesii.
