Lychnis

These are plants which often grow 3-4 ft and are of special note because of the bright colour of the flowers during the summer. Not difficult to grow, lychnis like plenty of moisture during the growing season, but to be rather drier at the roots during the winter. Stock may be increased from seed or by division of roots either in early autumn or spring. L. chakedonica is the best-known species, having bright scarlet flowers, and is sometimes referred to as ‘Jerusalem Cross’. It is good for cutting and takes up water easily.
