FLOWERING SHRUB. Nearer the tree category than a shrub, but very beautiful in spring, flowering with a wealth of bold white or purple blossom. The earliest to flower is stellata (halleana), March, while grandiflora blooms in August, and is best against a sunny wall. It is evergreen. Lennei has rose-purple. Conspicua, white, is the Yulan or lily tree. Most varieties are in flower in April. Plant young specimens in early spring in mould and peat, full sun and some shelter from north and east winds. Keep well watered during the first summer. Increase by in March and do not disturb for two years.
