MESEMBRYANTHEMUM or ICE PLANT

These are succulent plants which do particularly well near the sea but are not really hardy. They tolerate very thin soils, given perfect drainage, but must have a sunny position, otherwise the flowers refuse to open. Mesembryanthemum crini- florum (Livingstone daisy) is of prostrate habit with daisy-like blooms in red, pink, buff and apricot. Though perennial, it is best treated as a half-hardy annual.
