My generation will probably always think in terms of feet, inches, and Fahrenheit. While undoubtedly the metric system is logical and easier to work with, it remains a fact that the Imperial measures will remain for a generation. They are still in common usage, and to ignore them is impossible. For the exam, either system is quite acceptable unless specifically requested otherwise – candidates for the ‘Masters’ later on should use the metric system.

METRICATION FOR GARDENERS

MEASURE FOR MEASURE (A list from Alfred Fieldman)

or

METRICATION FOR IMPERIAL GARDENERS AND COOKS

(Bet Shakespeare never dreamed his play title would be messed about like this!)

1) By law the following are EXACT equivalents:-

a) Length 1 yard = 0.9144 metre.

1 foot = 0.3048 m or 30.48 cm or 304.8 m 1 inch = 2.540 cm or 25.40 mm 1 mile = 1.6093 km Conversely 1 metre = 1.0936 yd = 39.37 inches – not quite 3’3-5/

1 km = 0.6214 mile (roughly) 8 km = 5 miles)

b) Mass This

1 kilogram = 2.2046 lb (roughly 21b 3-l/4oz)

makes 1 pound = 453.6 grams; 1oz = 28.35g.

(1 gram is the average weight of 1 single Smartie inch) (a chocolate sweet)

c) Capacity 1 gallon = 4.544 litres or 1 litre

= 0.2201 gallon = 1.761 pints

1 pint = 568 millilitres; 1 fluid oz =

28.4 ml

d) Area Remember the old table -30-¼ sq yd = 1 sq rod 40 sq rod = 1 rood = 1210 sq yd 4 roods = 1 acre = 4840 sq yd 640 acres = 1 sq mile = 3 097 600 sq yd

Metric areas are based on the ARE (ah, not air) = 100 sq metre

1 are = 119.6 sq yd (roughly 3.954 sq rod)

Conversely, 1 sq yd = 0.8361 sq metre

Also, 1 are is an 11-yard square (within 1% error)

100 ares = 1 hectare = 2.471 acres = 11 959.64 sq

yd

100 hectares =1.sq km =0.3861 sq mile

Conversely, 1 sq mile ~ 2.59 sq km

1 acre = 0.4045 hectares

2) DRY MEASURE

The metric measure is based on the cubic decimetre, and the litre is VERY NEARLY 1 cu dm or 1000 cc

Remember the old table – 4 gills = 1 pint; 2 pints =

quart 4 quarts = 1 gallon; 2 gall =

peck 4 pecks = 1 bushel = 8 gallons

1 bushel is the volume of a box 22 inch x 10 inch x

This means that 1 bushel = 1.273 cu ft, and conversely,

1 cu ft = 6.284 gallons (or roughly 3 heaped buckets,

since most plastic buckets are about 2 gallons)

Also, 1 bushel = 36.352 litres exactly, and many garden

barrows hold a bushel

3) COMMERCIAL SIZES

(I) Forest Bark is sold by the cu ft, so 3.3 cu ft = 20.74 gallons or roughly 2.6 bushels.

(ii) Composts are sold by the litre. Below are some typical pack sizes and their approximate equivalents in gallons and buckets

100 ltrs = 22 gallons or 11 buckets I (roughly 2.751 bushels)

85 II = 18.7 M or 9.5 II , [ 2.338 I

80 M = 17.6 or 9 N [ 2.201

60 ¦I = 13.2 M or 6.5 H [ 1.651 II

40 II = 8.8 or 4.5 II [ 1.100 I

25 II = 5.5 or 2.75 II . [ 0.688 I

4) POTTING INFORMATION

1 bushel of compost will fill

2 Grow Bags or 20 seed trays or 9 x 10 pots or 13 x 9 pots or 18 x 8 pots or 30 x 7 pots or 60 x 5 pots or 175 x 3-½ pot

5) FOR THE COOKS

You will have noticed that when recipes are given the metric weights are not exact equivalents of the imperial weights.

Some other bits and pieces of metric conversion which might be useful to have on file.
