NICOTIANA or TOBACCO PLANT

HALF HARDY. . A. This is the very fragrant tobacco plant and a good mid-border subject, growing to about 3 ft., flowering freely but not profusely. Sow in spring under a cloche or in the greenhouse, and as the seed is tiny, barely cover it with soil, and transplant into boxes as soon as it is able to be handled to harden gradually, after which plant out in the open in rich deep soil in May. With their lovely heads of flowers they are among the finest border plants. They are best grouped in threes, the plants spaced 15 in. apart. Although strong growers they do not succeed if crowded with other plants. Some of the older types of nicotiana only open their flowers in late afternoon or early evening, but Daylight (white) and the strain known as Sensation, are open all day.
