Orchids are an investment

Chincherinchees are a good buy, even though they may have to be imported from South Africa; some are now produced in Britain. They are very long lasting and it sometimes takes five or six weeks for the flower spike to open fully. Keep the lower florets snipped off as they fade or the arrangement may begin to look shabby. In winter these flowers look particularly attractive when used with the dark green and black clusters of ivy berries. These ivy fruits last well and often those you gather for one arrangement will do for more to come. Keep an eye open for these and for other berries when you go into the country.

Orchids are nothing like as expensive as they seem, simply because they last so long. A spray of cymbidiums or two or three slipper orchids, cypripediums, look lovely in pot-et-fieur arrangements; so in fact do all smooth-stemmed flowers.
