ORNITHOGALUM or STAR OF BETHLEHEM

P. These bulbs like a warm, fertile soil and are increased by division in aututnn. Ornithogalum umbellatum is the well-known Star of Bethlehem with umbels of pure white, starry flowers in spring and early summer, growing to about 15 in. It succeeds practically anywhere but is probably happiest in partial shade. Excellent for cutting, increases rapidly and is suitable for naturalising. 0. pyramidale is a useful border plant, a little taller with snowy-white flowers on long racemes in early June. 0. thyrsoides reaches 18 in., again with white blooms, but is not hardy. The blooms are. imported from South Africa and open gradually when placed in water, remaining in flower for some weeks. Ornithogalum can be placed almost anywhere in a living room and the mantelpiece is a favourite position.
