There is only one kind, Osmarea burkwoodii, a hybrid between Osmanthus delavayi and Phillyrea decora. It is rather like the former in appearance with similar flowers, not perhaps either quite so freely produced or so sweetly scented, but it is stiffer in growth and hardier which makes it suitable for use as a hedge or screen and it also makes an attractive specimen bush, eventually 7 or 8 ft. high. It grows well in most soils, including those on chalk or limestone, and it can be pruned quite hard in spring after flowering, or it can be trimmed any time in summer.
