‘Intrigue’ Height 50 cm (20 in). Possibly the deepest red cluster-flowered variety available. The deep crimson blooms, with a dark, velvety appearance, show bright yellow stamens when fully open. Large trusses of these blooms are borne on short, sturdy stems, making this a neat, low-growing variety.
‘John Crossley’ Height 90 cm (3 ft). Well-shaped yellow blooms are carried on strong stems. The foliage is attractive and the plant free-flowering.
‘Judy Garland’ Height 90 cm (3 ft). This yellow and red rose is very much like the old ‘Masquerade’, though possibly stronger growing. It has large trusses of flowers on thick stems, and is both free-flowering and disease-resistant.
‘Kerryman’ Height 75 cm (2.5 ft). The large, hybrid tea-type blooms are a rather unusual shade of pink. Good-sized trusses are borne freely over a long period. The foliage is attractive and disease-resistant.

‘Korresia’ Height 75 cm (2.5 ft). The yellow blooms are hybrid-tea shape, fragrant and borne freely on sturdy stems. The plant has a branching habit, with dark green, disease-resistant foliage.
‘Liverpool Echo’ Height 1.2 m (4 ft). This quite tall, free-flowering, salmon-pink variety is outstanding. The small blooms are of perfect shape, carried in very large trusses of flowers on thick, sturdy stems. The mid-green foliage is disease-resistant.
‘Margaret MerriP Height 90 cm (3 ft). A beautifully scented variety that carries pearly-blushed flowers turning to pure white. It is sometimes sold as large-flowered (H.T.). By any standards it is a superb rose, with a bushy, branching habit, a continuousof flowers and dark green, glossy foliage.
‘Mary Sumner’ Height 90 cm (3 ft). A vermilion-shaded variety, carrying large trusses of blooms on strong stems. The glossy green foliage is resistant to disease.
‘MatangP Height 90 cm (3 ft). A free-flowering variety, with double, orange-vermilion blooms that have silver shading at the base and on the reverse of the petals. They are slightly fragrant and carried in large trusses on strong stems.
‘Meggido’ Height 75 cm (2.5 ft). The bright red flowers are truly striking, being an unusual shade. The beautifully-shaped blooms are borne freely on good stems. The habit is rather bushy, with good foliage.
‘Memento’ Height 75 cm (zVt ft). Salmon-vermilion blooms, opening flat, are unusually weather-resistant. The large trusses of flowers are borne on sturdy stems and backed by dark green foliage.
‘Princess Michael of Kent’ Height 75 cm (2.5 ft). Clear yellow blooms are carried freely in large clusters. The variety has a bushy habit, with disease-resistant, mid-green foliage.
‘Ripples’ Height 90 cm (3 ft). This is one of the mauve varieties, possibly the best of its type. It is free-flowering, with large trusses of blooms and healthy foliage.

Modern shrub roses ‘Anna Zinkersen’ Height 1.4 m (41I.! ft). Spread 90 cm-1.2 m (3-4 ft). The pale lemon blooms are very fragrant and the variety is repeat-flowering. It has a rather bushy habit, with good, dark green foliage.
‘Butterfly Wings’ Height 1.2 m (4 ft). Spread 1 m (y 1/2 ft). The blush-white petals have rose-red edges. It forms a spreading bush, with good foliage.
‘Charles Austin’ Height 90 cm (3 ft). Upright habit. This is one of the newer introductions, with Rosa centifolia-typc flowers but a hybrid-tea or floribunda habit. The apricot-shaded blooms are strongly scented and the variety is repeat-flowering.
‘Charmian’ Height and spread 1.2 m (4 ft). Closely identified with ‘Charles Austin’, the flowers are a beautiful deep pink and very fragrant. It has a rather spreading habit.
‘Cecile Brunner’ Height 90 cm (3 ft). One of the old-fashioned polyantha roses. Delicately scented, tiny, pale pink flowers are perfectly formed and freely borne in clusters throughout summer. It can also be obtained as a climber.
‘Fountain’ Height 1.8 m (6 ft). Upright habit. With double, well-shaped blooms of crimson velvet, this is a vigorous plant. The foliage is dark green and shiny.
‘La Sevillana’ Height 60 cm (2 ft). Spread 1.4 m (4.5 ft). Vermilion blooms, in large trusses, are carried on sturdy short stems. It flowers continuously over a very long period and is an outstanding variety.
‘Lassie’ Height I.S m (6 ft). Spread 1.5 m (5 ft). A continuous-flowering variety with attractive lavender-pink blooms. Rather strong growth and good foliage.
‘Marjorie Fair’ Height 75 cm (2.5 ft). Spread 50 cm (20 in). Carmine-red flowers, with a white eye, on short, strong stems. It will continue flowering until late autumn, making an attractive, compact bush.
‘Mounthatten’ Height 1.8 m (6 ft). Spread 1.5 m (5 ft). Although often listed as cluster-flowered (floribunda), this variety develops into a large bush, best thought of as a modern shrub. Scented, clear yellow flowers are carried in profusion over a long period, set off by shiny, dark green foliage.
‘Olive’ Height 1.8 m (6 ft). Upright habit. The large blooms, on strong, thick stems, make good cut flowers. Dark green, glossy foliage clothes the rather tall, upright stems.
‘Pearl Drift’ Height 1.2 m (4 ft). Spread 1.5 m (5 ft). Prized for its continuously-produced creamy-white flowers. It has a rather spreading habit, with good foliage.
‘Radox Bouquet’ Height 1.8 m (6 ft). Upright habit. The rose-pink flowers, with a lovely fragrance, often split into quarters when they are fully open. This is a good cut rose, of tall, upright habit, dark green, shiny foilage and considerable resistance to disease.
‘Robusta’ Height 1.8 m (6 ft). Spread 1.5 m (5 ft). This shrub rose is covered with single, scarlet blooms over a very long period.
‘Sally Holmes’ Height 1.5 m (5 ft). Spread 1.2 m (4 ft). It carries large trusses of fragrant, creamy-white flowers, having a compact, bushy habit and good foliage.
‘Saga’ Height 1.5 m (5 ft). Spread 90 cm (3 ft). With the blooms a striking shade of buff on white, it flowers early in summer and again in the autumn. The habit is upright and bushy.
Climbing roses ‘Bantry Bay’ Height 3 m (10 ft). Pink, semi-double blooms and a vigorous habit. Glossy foliage. Repeat-flowering.
‘Climbing Cecilc Brunner’ Height to 7.5 m (25 ft). Pale pink, beautifully-shaped small blooms are produced in profusion. A vigorous, summer-flowering rose.
‘Coral Dawn’ Height 3 m (10 ft). A variety with double, soft pink blooms in large clusters. Repeat-flowering.
‘Dreaming Spires’ Height 3.6 m (12 ft) or more. The fragrant, double blooms are golden-yellow, the buds being marked with deep red. It has vigorous, upright growth with dark green foliage. Repeat-flowering.
‘Golden Showers’ Height 2.4 m (8 ft). Well-shaped golden-yellow buds open into semi-double blooms. This is a particularly free-flowering variety, putting on an almost continuous display throughout the summer. It will flower quite freely in a shaded spot.
‘Grand Hotel’ Height 2.4 m (8 ft) or more. With beautiful red blooms, well shaped and freely borne, this is a good pillar rose. Repeat-flowering.
‘Handel’ Height 2.4-3 m (8-1 oft). The creamy-white blooms, flushed pink at the edges, are of perfect shape. Growth is vigorous, the foliage dark green. A good pillar rose, and repeat-flowering.
‘Leverkusen’Height 3-3.6 m( 10-12 ft). The blooms are creamy-yellow and rosette-shaped. Though with the habit of a rambler, it usually blooms again in the autumn.
‘Mermaid’ Height up to 9 m (30 ft). With prominent amber stamens, the large, single, primrose-yellow flowers are borne from mid-summer onwards. The foliage is particularly glossy. This variety grows well on a north-lacing wall, but it is not completely hardy in the coldest winters.
‘Pink Perpetue’ Height 1.8-2.4 m (6-8 ft)-Bright rose-pink blooms are freely borne in large clusters throughout summer. This is an excellent rose for a sunny wall.
‘Swan Lake’ Height 2.4-3 m (6-8 ft)- A variety with well-shaped, large, white blooms and a vigorous growth habit. The foliage is mid-green and leathery. It makes a good pillar rose and is repeat-flowering.
‘Sympathie’ Height 3-3.6 m (10-12 ft). The full, fragrant blooms are scarlet, with a velvety texture. It is quite vigorous, with good foliage, and is very hardy. Repeat-flowering.
Rambler roses ‘Dorothy Perkins’ Height 5.5 m (18 ft).
-pink blooms appear in large clusters in early summer. This is a vigorous grower.
‘Felicite et Perpctuc’ Height 3 m (10 ft).

‘Fairy Prince’ Height 75 cm (2.5 ft). Spread 1.8 m (6 ft). This resembles ‘Fairyland’ in every detail, except for the colour, which is geranium pink.

R. x bigbdownensis. Height 1.8 m (6 ft).
Spread 1.5 m (5 ft). Single crimson flowers, orange-red hips.
R. moyesii. Height 2.4 m (8 ft). Spread 1. m (5 ft). Deep blood-red single flowers, orange-red hips.
R. rugosa ‘Scabrosa’. Height and spread 1.5 m (5 ft). Mauve and pink flowers; large, bright red hips.
R. sweginzowii. Height 2.4 m (8 ft). Spread 1.2 m (4 ft). Pink flowers, bright red hips that are earlier than most.
Old-fashioned shrub roses
‘Buff Beauty’ (Hybrid Musk). Height I.2 m (4 ft). Spread 1.8 m (6 ft). The clusters of double, rosette-shaped flowers are apricot-yellow, shaded buff, and very fragrant. It gives a good second display in late summer. With its spreading habit, this rose can be trained on wires to form a hedge. It is apt to suffer fromduring August, so must be watched and sprayed when necessary.
‘Penelope’ (Hybrid Musk). Height 1.2 m (4 ft). Spread 1.8 m (6 ft). Salmon-pink buds pale almost to white as the scented blooms mature. There is a second flush quite late in the summer. This rose can also be grown as a hedge.
‘Fantin-Latour’ (Centifolia). Height and spread 1.5 m (5 ft). The beautiful, pale pink cupped blooms deepen in colour at the centre of the open flowers. One summer display only. Rosa centifolia. Height 1.5 m (5 ft). Spread 1.2 m (4 ft). Often called the ‘cabbage rose’, or the ‘Provence rose’, this old favourite has clear, deep pink flowers that are delightfully fragrant.
‘Nuits de Young’ (Moss). Height and spread 1.2 m (4 ft). The colour is deep maroon-purple, outstanding yellow stamens. Summer-flowering. The buds are heavily mossed.
‘William Lobb’ (Moss). Height and spread 1.8 m (6 ft). The newly-opened blooms are dark crimson, but fade to lavender-mauve with white tints in the centre. Rather a tall habit; attractive dark green foliage on thorny stems.
‘Mme Hardy’ (Damask). Height 1.5 m (5 ft). Spread 1.2 m (4 ft). A beautiful pure white rose, with excellent dark green foliage. A ‘must’ for any garden where space allows.
Rosa damascena ‘Versicolor’ (Damask). Height and spread 1.5111(5 ft). This is the York and Lancaster rose, with blooms of varying colours – pale pink, white or a mixture of both. It has vigorous, dark green foliage.
‘Charles De Mills’ (Gallica). Height and spread 1.5 m(5 ft). This compact, upright bush flowers profusely, in June and July, causing some branches to bow almost to ground level. The blooms are full petalled and whorled, giving them an exotic appearance with their shades of maroon and rich, dark purplish-red. RosaMnndi (Gallica). Height 90 cm (3 ft). Spread 1.5 m (5 ft). This is one of the most popular of the old roses, with almost flat, open flowers. These have a mixture of red and white markings, with golden stamens, and are certainly eye-catching.
‘Paul Neyron’ (Hybrid Perpetual). Height 1.2 m (4 ft). Spread 90 cm (3 ft). The fragrant, deep rose-pink flowers are large and peony-shaped, carried on sturdy stems. These are clothed with pale green foliage.
‘Frau Dagmar Hastrup’ (Rugosa Hybrid). Height 90 cm (3 ft). Spread 1.2 m (4 ft). Noted for its neat, compact habit, the silvery-pink single blooms are followed by attractive deep red hips. Disease-resistant foliage.
‘Pink Grootendorst’ (Rugosa Hybrid). Height 1.8 m (6 ft). Spread 1.5 m (5 ft). Small, picotee-edged pink flowers are borne in large clusters, making a magnificent sight over a long period.
