P. The well-known butcher’s broom with bright red round berries only produced on female plants. It makes an evergreen shrub about 2 ½ ft. tall, increasing rapidly on moist soils (which it prefers) by means of suckers. Tolerates dense shade, as under large trees. Plant in a shady spot, including both male and female forms to ensure berrying. Increase by division in spring or autumn. Ruscus aculeatus is the best-known species.
