Salpiglossis 10°C/50°F; Chile

These are good examples of half-hardy garden annuals that may be put to excellent use as pot plants. Indoors, they require cool, light and airy conditions with a watering programme that is never neglected. Salpiglossis, with brightly-coloured flowers, make fine feature plants up to 60cm/2ft high in the entrance hall of the house, if this is properly lit. Seed may be sown at any time between February and September, and if sowing can be staggered over this period then plants may be had in flower from July and through to the following spring. When potting use a loam-based mixture.
