Coarse sand is a very effective material for helping to break up heavy, badly-drained land. Sand for potting composts should be fine and gritty and is often referred to as ‘sharp’. Cuttings can be rooted very quickly in pure sand but as it contains no plant foods and dries out rapidly, they must be transferred to a proper loamy compost as soon as possible after roots have formed.
