SCHIZOSTYLIS, CAFFRE or KAFFIR LILY

P. These autumn-flowering plants are best grown at the foot of a south wall or at the foot of a greenhouse and covered with bracken, dry leaves or similar material in winter. In the south-west they can often be grown unprotected in the open. The 18 in. spikes are scarlet in the type plant (Schizostylis coccinea). Mrs Hegarty is coral-pink and Viscountess Byng rather paler in colour. Increase by division in spring.
