This vegetable deserved to be grown more widely by amateurs as it is not difficult and is distinctly appetising. It achieved some popularity during World War II but has since dropped into obscurity. Alternative names are silver beet or Swiss chard. The white stalks and midribs are used like seakale (and taste much the same), the leaves like spinach. Sow in early April, thinning to about io in. The crop should be ready to pull from autumn well into winter. Note that fairly rich soil is desirable, otherwise the stalks and midribs will be thin. If the land is poor work in plenty of compost etc. before sowing and feed with a complete fertiliser once or twice during summer.
