SET

This term has two distinct horticultural meanings. Fruit blossom is said to be set when fertilisation has taken place and fruits are starting to form. Potato sets are tubers intended for planting as opposed to tubers ready for lifting. Shallot bulbs for planting are also called sets. Onion sets are small bulbs raised from seed sown in May. The sets are lifted, dried and ripened in summer and sold for planting the following spring. They are probably less liable to injury by onion fly than seedling onions. Note that bulbs grown from onion sets die down a little earlier than those grown from seed. They are accordingly very popular in colder, northern districts.
