FLOWERING SHRUB. These are evergreen shrubs with fragrant white flowers in early summer. The bright red berries of most species remain over winter. Moist, peaty soil is essential. Skimmia japonica (oblata) does especially well in town gardens. It makes a dome-shaped bush with large, scarlet berries in the female form.

S. Fortunei (Reevesiana) is more compact to about 2 ft. The form rubella is perhaps more tolerant of lime. Skimmias are increased by 4 in. long cuttings in summer.
